Spreading kindness is a free way to show people in your community how much you care – and couldn’t we all use a little more kindness in our lives? Here are a few simple ways to do your part and throw kindness around your community like confetti.
Support Your Local Everything
This one is huge. Check out locally owned businesses and buy their products. Even if you don’t make a purchase, a good review or social media check-in can go a long way.
Volunteer
Volunteering your time and effort gives back to your community in a big way – whether it’s at a local animal shelter, homeless shelter, public library, or community event.
Welcome Aboard
If there is a local cause or organization that you are passionate about, consider joining the board. Many nonprofits are run by a volunteer board of directors who ultimately make important decisions.
Clean It Up
There’s a chance your community has at least one neighborhood group devoted to cleaning up streets, parks, and playgrounds or planting trees, shrubs, and flowers. If it doesn’t already exist, consider starting one!
Make a Donation
Donations don’t always mean money; you can donate nonperishable food items to local homeless shelters or clothes to a nonprofit thrift store. If you have a skill set others could benefit from, you can also consider donating your time to teach a free community class.
Senior Appreciation
There are many ways to brighten the lives of seniors in your community, from reading and playing games to watching movies.
Why Bother?
When you’re involved in your community, everyone benefits. Here are some other reasons to spread kindness in your community.
- You meet like-minded people.
- It’s no secret that being kind makes you feel good, but did you know it also releases serotonin and boosts oxytocin?
- You let your voice be heard.
- Kindness is contagious. By actively seeking opportunities to be kind, you encourage everyone around you to do the same.
