How to Be Happier at Work

We’ve read articles about how to be more productive and efficient at work. And while both are important, they aren’t the only things that matter. Our mental health is just as critical. Because when we’re happy, productivity and efficiency follow. Here are a few ways to be happier at work.

Make It Your Space

Your office may never be as cozy as your home, but you spend a lot of time there, so why not tailor it to your personality? Decorate with photos of your favorite people and animals, hang some art, adjust the lighting to create a warmer ambiance, add a plant or two, and add a calendar so you can eye your plans for the weekends.

Reward Yourself

On days when your to-do list has nothing fun on it, treat yourself. For instance, once you make the phone call, attend the meeting, or wrap up the report, grab a coffee and a scone from your favorite place.

Find Your People

You don’t have to be best friends with everyone at work, but find people you enjoy being around and who share your values. Having an office support system takes some pressure off and can make you happier at the office.

Take a Play Break

Take a few minutes away from your desk to play. You can doodle, color, mold clay, or work on a puzzle – anything creative that helps you de-stress and decompress. Your brain, your boss, and your work will appreciate these breaks.

Exercise Before Work

Exercising before work can improve your energy and mood throughout the day. More energy will result in more productivity, which means you will feel better about leaving work where it belongs: in the office.

Make the Most of Your Weekends

Leave work at work. Spend your weekend doing things that recharge you: go to brunch with friends, curl up with a good book, do some gardening, or hit the trails for fresh air and sunshine.

Take Your Vacation Days

They exist for a reason. You don’t have to take a crazy vacation to a far-off land; staycations can be just as rewarding.

If All Else Fails

Ultimately, leaving a job that makes you unhappy can be crucial for your mental health. If you’re feeling unfulfilled at work, it may be time to look for something new.
