Maintaining long-distance friendships is not easy – it takes effort from both parties to make it work. But friendships can survive across cities, states, and the globe. Here are a few ways to keep your friendships strong despite the miles in between.
Prepare Yourself for Challenges
Preparing yourself before the big departure can make things easier when challenges arise. One challenge we don’t often consider is that we can no longer rely on body language cues such as an eyebrow raise or a gentle nudge when someone says something ridiculous you will discuss later.
Never Underestimate the Power of Technology
Technology is great because it allows us to constantly communicate. You can text during your favorite weekly shows or set aside regular times to talk via Facetime to catch up.
Make Sure You Initiate Conversations
Don’t leave it up to your friend to initiate every conversation. You can Facetime to say hi, text when something exciting happens, or call on a particularly bad day when you just want to hear their voice.
Don’t Leave Them on Read
Not returning calls or texts can strain a relationship. Of course, lags can happen, but getting back to them in a timely manner and staying on top of communication is just another way to show that you care.
No Jealousy Allowed
You can’t be jealous of their real-life friends, nor can they be jealous of yours. You both deserve an awesome in-person support group.
Parcel Greetings
While handwritten letters don’t need to be your primary form of communication, sending a card or letter every now and then should be a part of the communication rotation – it’s just extra meaningful.
Start a Virtual Book Club
Pick a book and “meet” once a month via Facetime to discuss. Take things up a notch by having snacks and wine. As a bonus, while reading, you’ll be thinking of each other and taking notes of things you want to discuss during your meet-up.
Embrace Social Media
No matter which platform you prefer, social is a great way to stay connected and see what your friends are up to.
Commit to Getting Together IRL
Whether you take a vacation together or stay at each other’s homes, make it a goal to get together as often as your schedule allows and create new memories.
