How to Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh

Gone nose blind? When we are exposed to a scent for long periods of time, our bodies get used to the smell. Unfortunately, your home could have an unpleasant odor you may not be aware of, but your guests will certainly notice. Keep reading for some tips on keeping your home smelling fresh.

Potpourri

With some good ol’ fashioned potpourri, you’ll have a decorative bowl that looks aesthetically pleasing and smells clean. If you don’t want to spend money on store-bought options, you can make your own. Some neat tips and tricks can be found here. Just be sure to allow the materials time to dry.

Simmering Pots

Bring a large pot of water to a boil, then add ingredients like citrus slices, lavender, mint, or natural herbs. In a few minutes, the steam will disperse the scent throughout your home. The best part about this concoction is that you can customize it to your liking.

Clean Out the Fridge

This suggestion may sound obvious, but oftentimes people don’t realize what old food can do to a home’s smell. Sure, you’re only opening the refrigerator for a few seconds at a time, but a whiff of that stale Chinese food, and you’ve ruined the entire atmosphere. Clean your fridge once a week, throwing out anything past its expiration date. Don’t forget leftovers and condiments!

Once a month, scrub the shelves and drawers to remove stains and spills. If your shelves and drawers are removable, even better. Take them out and soak them. Then, wipe down the inside of the refrigerator and thoroughly rinse it before returning the shelves and drawers to their respective places.

Natural Essential Oils

Usually, when there’s a funky smell in the house, people light a candle or spray some Febreze. Instead, opt for a diffuser with natural essential oils. Not sure where to start? Look at your favorite perfume and see what scents are in it. Then, buy some familiar aromas, like citrus or floral.

Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets aren’t just for keeping your clothes static-free! Try scattering them throughout the house in closets, dressers, and drawers. This is a quick fix for adding freshness into small spaces. You can thank us later!
