According to Seppic, Dove Pro Age conducted a study in 2007 that found in a sample of 1,450 women between the ages of 50-64 across nine countries that, “Beauty has no age.” Ten years later, according to a beauty survey by Philips Global of 10,000 women, 70% said that beauty was “something you define yourself.” So how are brands conforming to these views of beauty? They do it by adopting pro-aging strategies. If this sounds like something you can get behind, read on to learn how to hop aboard this trend.
What Is Pro-Aging?
First things first: Let’s talk about what pro-aging entails. The pro-aging movement embraces a positive approach to getting older and the changes that come with it. It maintains that aging is a natural part of life and that we can work with the body rather than against it. Here are some ways you can do just that.
Learn to Slow Down
We don’t know about you, but we find ourselves rushing from one activity to another day after day, even when we are exhausted. Slowing down may be just what the doctor ordered to improve our health and well-being. Slowing down helps minimize stressors and allows us to find time to take better care of ourselves. Those who take life at a slower pace tend to be happier and healthier, and that’s enough of a reason for us!
Eat Foods That Nourish
Taking care of ourselves and aging gracefully starts on the inside, so a diet rich in proteins, fresh fruits, and in-season vegetables will not only make you feel better internally but allow you to see results externally.
Love the Skin You’re In
Making sure you’re staying hydrated, exfoliating your skin to get rid of dead skin cells, using serums that rejuvenate, applying sunscreen, using gel eye masks, gentle cleansers, and moisturizers, and getting an adequate amount of sleep are all ways you can show big love to your skin.
Keep Moving
Staying physically active is another pro-aging approach to caring for bodies and minds. If you live close to work, walk or bike there on perfect weather days. If you drive to work, park farther away and enjoy the walk. Take the stairs, go for a walk on your lunch break, and commit to getting up and moving or stretching every hour.
Hit the Hay
Getting adequate sleep is the best thing you can do for yourself because a good night’s sleep supports a healthy weight, immune system, concentration, productivity, and athletic performance, reduces the risk of certain diseases, regulates emotions, and reduces inflammation, among other benefits.
