Should You Get a Tattoo While on Vacation?

Getting a tattoo requires thought and planning. So before you decide to get a tattoo while on vacation, be sure to consider the following factors.

Cleanliness and Sanitary Precautions

Wherever you get your tattoo should be extremely clean. In the United States, there are laws that tattoo parlors must follow. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. So, always ensure that your needle is unpacked in front of you and that the bottle of ink is labeled by the original manufacturer. Additionally, the artist should wear gloves and never reuse needles.

Sun Exposure and Alcohol

Especially if you are going to a sunny destination, you may want to schedule your tattoo appointment for the end of your trip. This is because prolonged sun exposure or unclean water can prevent your tattoo from healing. You also want to avoid being sunburnt before you get the tattoo done and avoid alcohol within 24 hours of the tattoo.

Research and Reviews

Most tattoo errors and mishaps can be corrected, but you don’t want to deal with that, especially while on vacation. To avoid this, check out the shop’s online reviews, look at their portfolio, and ask questions. You should also be able to explain and discuss your tattoo in a language that you understand.

Design Complexity

It may go without saying, but you may not have time on your vacation to spend 12 hours in a tattoo parlor – or make multiple visits. So always ensure that you design the complexity of your tattoo based on the time you have in your destination.

Tattoo Tourism Is Real

Tattoo tourism is a real thing and can be a lot of fun. However, there are tattoo parlors and individuals out there who prey on unknowing or naive tourists. So be sure to do your research, plan out your appointment, and, above all, trust your gut. If something seems off about a tattoo shop, it probably is.
