Five Ways to Stick With Your New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year is a chance for a fresh start – whether you’re trying to break a bad habit, start a healthy one, or getting a fresh look at a current goal. In the beginning, you probably hit the ground running. But after a few weeks, keeping those resolutions can feel more challenging. So, we’ve put together some great tips for sticking with those New Year’s resolutions and making 2022 your best year yet.

Make Your Goal Specific

Goals are hard to meet when they’re not defined. To set a resolution that you actually stick with, make it specific. For example, if your goal is to get in shape, determine how many times per week – and for how long – you exercise. Or, if your goal is to drink more water, set out to drink a certain amount per day. The more specific the goal, the more likely you will stick to it.

Take Small Steps Toward the Finish Line

Another reason why resolutions are dropped is that they’re too big or require too much upkeep. For example, starting a restrictive diet may seem like the fastest way to lose weight, but it is too much to maintain. Instead, small changes like replacing one meal or snack each day with a healthy alternative will build sustainable habits that will keep you on track of your resolution year-round.

Set Aside Time for Your Goals

No matter your goal, you might not meet it if you don’t make it a priority. A good way to stick with your resolution is to make those steps part of your daily schedule. For instance, starting every morning with a run or walk will help you meet your fitness goal, but it will also create a routine that is easy for you to follow.

Have an Accountability Partner

One easy way to stick to your resolution is by bringing in a friend or trusted partner to hold you accountable. This accountability can be as simple as a text a day or a monthly dinner to share accomplishments and failures. Having this accountability will be a constant refreshing presence to your journey.

Focus on Your Success

When working on yourself, it can be easy to get discouraged. But if you focus on the setbacks, it will be more difficult to continue working on your goals. So, find time each week to reflect on your accomplishments. The determination you show to reach your goals is impressive, and it should impress you, too. So take some time to congratulate yourself and show yourself some love.
